Online Predators

*Article: Online Safety at School
http//www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,1618907,00.asp

In this article it states that students are school computers rather than computers at home. This is because the students are better supervised and the computers are even monitored thought out the day. The librarians even know what to look for it is seems like a student is looking at things that are not academic. The chat option is also blocked, this is because it has been found that this is the main way the online predators like to find their victims. When enrolling your child into a school district; ask about their website, if there are pictures, students personal information. If there are pictures of students there should be at least four in the picture and should not be named. The article also talks about the COPPAA (the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) which states "bars Web sites from letting preteens use interactive communications or from collecting personally identifiable information from them without parental permission." I think that this act is a very important one. The article ends with saying that anyone involved are working together to making and ensuring that the students are safe as possible online at school.

I picked this website because it talks about computers and internet assess in schools. The website begins with who is at risk to encounter with an online predator. These are kids and teenagers who chat rooms, e-mail and instant messaging. These things are not always bad when you are aware of who you are talking to, but if you are talking with someone that you don't know things can get ugly. This particular part of the website is for the teachers. Then the website talks about how the online predator works, they will talk to a student/child/teen via chat rooms, e-mail or instant messaging. While talking with the student they will lie about their age, being their victims age or younger. The predators will do anything to "seduce" their victims by simply giving them attention, affection, kindness, and even gifts. They will often devote considerable time, money and energy to this effort.

*Youtube: Online Predators- A must see for parents

In this video I found on youtube is a newscast featuring a children's book entitled Little Red Hoodie written by Adrianna Kruse. This book a different version on the classic tale of “Little Red Riding Hood.” In the book the “Big Bad Wolf” is an online predator portending that he was Granny. Adrianna Kruse got the idea for this book when she was in class with her 2nd grades and they were talking about a sleepover, where they got on to one of their older sisters myspace. This idea is something I wish I could have thought of. I will be going and getting one of these books for my god-daughter.

  1. Heven, good point to make, we usually look at predators as someone looking in our windows or watching from a distance. Sadly we need to keep an even more diligent eye on our children online. The scary fact that so many adults usually men will pretend to be someone else, they are so good at what they do, they can get whatever information from our children they dont even recognize it. Thank you for investigating this information even further.
