Online Predators

I didn’t have a lot of luck with the cites given to us. I needed to go to other sources. There is a lot of information out there. Most of it is geared to kids. As it should be, It’s hard to believe how vulnerable they are. We teach them “not to talk to strangers”. If we meet somebody for the 1st time on line… We don’t know them, they are strangers!

“ Online Predators”. 8/11/08 N.P. University of South Florida news.

It is interesting and good to know that the world is becoming more aware of the risks we face being on-line and all of our investigative agencies are paying attention and using the technology to keep up with and work against the online predators. The article was written well enough, just not that helpful for me with the specific information I was after. I don’t know how much the author knows. But, I feel the information was passed along accurately. The information relayed is current and interesting. Anyone can read and understand what the article is saying. I was glad to see there was involvement from other countries and a world-wide interest.

This was a great podcast. So very informative and quite “eye-opening”. This has been written to make us more aware. I think, I listened 4 times. This is a current and up- to- date topic along with information. I believe this is a very credible podcast and the 2 gentlemen presenting are very real, accurate and knowledgeable. I don’t think much of me being physically at risk of on line predators. I can see and have been made aware of how dangerous these online predators can be. And, the length a predator will go to get to kids… That is scary. Not to mention, phone numbers, bank accounts and addresses.

I believe that CNN is great, they are world wide and give us a lot of great news and current information. This is an informative article letting us know what we should be aware of and what we can do to guard against getting hurt by sexual predators. Becoming more computer savvy, become aware of current “lingo”, social networks and parental controls. I believe not only is this information informative… But, it accurate and very real. It’s useful and people need to have a read. This information can be used by anyone with a computer. We need to be just as aware of what’s going on while we’re on-line as we are when walking down a poorly lit street at night. What’s worse about the “NET”, You can’t see who’s trying to get to you.

Virtual Public School Issues - Kayleigh Metzner

Virtual Public School Issues

1. Accreditation
Just like any other school, a virtual public/private school can be accredited by highly respected organizations

Article: The AdvancED Standards for Quality Schools: http://www.advanc-ed.org/accreditation/standards/advanced_school_standards.pdf

Content: This article thoroughly explains the principles and values that any public or private schools (including virtual schools) within a 30-state region (including Ohio) should govern themselves by. In addition, this article gives reasons as to why the accreditation standards are important.
Purpose: This article could be used as a guide for schools to adhere to in order to develop into quality educational facilities.
Authority: The article was distributed by AdvancED, a prestigious school accreditation organization.
Currency: The standards in the article became effective in 2007, and are still effective today.
Usefulness: The information that I found in this article lets people know that a virtual public or private school can be accredited just like any other school, as long as they meet the AdvancED Standards for Quality Schools.
Reliability: The information in the article is accurate.
Ease of Use: Although the inteded audience for this article is mainly school staff or administrators, it can be easily read and understood by just about anyone. I found all the concepts to be well-written and comprehendable.
Reflection: I found this article very interesting – I love how it is so explicit. The issues that are focused on are specific and very important. I think that AdvancED is on the right track, and I hope that it will continue to grow. I think it would be great if schools all around the country adhered to the AdvancEd Standards for Quality Schools.

1. Teacher Certification
Just like brick-&-mortar public schools, virtual public schools will only hire state-certified teachers. However, there are Standards for Quality Online Teaching by SREB (Southern Regional Education Board), which I found on http://www.inacol.org/ .

Website: http://www.inacol.org/
Article: http://www.sreb.org/publications/2009/09T01_Guide_profdev_online_teach.pdf

Content/ Purpose: The website’s function is to help provide students around the world recieve a quality online education. The article was listed on the website, and helps describe how teachers can better their virtual teaching techniques.
Authority: The website is iNACOL’s (International Association for K-12 Online Learning) official website. The article was produced by SREB (Southern Regional Education Board). Both are esteemed organizations.
Currency: The website has been updated in 2009. The article was written in March, 2009
Usefulness: these allow teachers who may teach online or use online tools to function on an appropriate and up-to-date level.
Reliability: The information given by these sources is accurate.
Ease of Use: The iNACOL website is very user-friendly. It is easy to navigate and the information is easy to understand. The article, on the other hand, may require an understanding of basic education-related concepts and issues.
Reflect: These two resources would be very helpful to teachers, administrators, or parents who would like to improve their online school or to bring their brick-and-mortar school into the virtual world of education.

1. Consequences
How does virtual schooling effect the most important people in education: sudents?

Podcast 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeOP0ON5Hm8&feature=related
Podcast 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0a3PhaZDMc

Content: These videos are about families who use the K-12 online curriculum via virtual academies.
Purpose: These videos can show others how positive an online learning experience can be.
Authority: These are provided by the K-12 company, a reliable source.
Currency: Both videos were posted on June 7th, 2007.
Usefulness: These videos show the benefits of virtual public schooling, primarily to parents who are looking for alternate schooling options.
Reliablity: The information is accurate.
Ease of Use: These videos are very easy to understand and can reach a large audience because they were posted on youtube.
Reflect: Many people think that the concequences of schooling a child via the internet is certain to result in a loss of interest, loss of social skills, or loss of time. However, these two videos clarify the point that virtual schooling can provide more gains than losses for students.

Cory Landis - Digital Divide

I chose to look into the digital divide for this post. Here is what I found:

The Article:
J. Cooper (2006)
The digital divide: the special case of gender
Journal of Computer Assisted Learning 22 (5)

http://pkp.sfu.ca/ojs/demo/present/index.php/jce/article/view/180/65

This article talks about the digital divide in the sense of gender. The article displays results of studies done in the past as well as now. It is basically showing that girls and women aren't reaping the benefits of technology as easily as men. There are several reasons they suggest. The main is because girls and women just don't feel as comfortable around technology. They also suggest this because it has become a stereotype that men and boys are suited for technology better. Thus this affects the mental process of women and girls.

The Video:

This video is short but does have some good points. It tells us that there is a large group of people who don't have access to a computer or technology in the sense of broadband internet. The video shows us that people making money can afford broadband and therefore are acquainted better with the internet and have access to more jobs and it's creating a viscous
circle.

The Website:
Wikipedia

I chose to look up the digital divide on Wikipedia to see what it had to say about it. There is a lot of information about the digital divide but I looked closer at the divide in education. While the government has done a great job of allocating money to schools to provide not only computers but also internet access, there is still a problem with a divide. This divide is showing up between children of higher income and children of lower income. While the higher income children have access to computers and internet at their home the lower income children don't. This is still creating problems because it's about your overall experience with technology that is key to closing the divide.

What it all means:

Until we break the stereotypes and provide equal access to technology for all, the world is still going to experience the divide. Perhaps within a generation or two technology access will have gone down in cost and therefore it will be easier to access. As for the gender issue, I believe that this will quickly fade away within the next generation. Already I've encountered a number of females that are completely comfortable behind the mouse and keyboard. In some cases they've known about different aspects about technology than I have. We all have something to learn.

Web 2.0

Research Article

The Internet has more to offer now then ever. You see the technological advances everywhere in our society, and in some ways we rely on it. This article explains some of the befits in having Web 2.0 and some negatives. He also brings up how teachers still separate computers from the rest of the tools in the classroom, or forget the importance of books and other materials in the class. Mostly, this article focus on how we befit in learning with Web. 2.0, but also talks how we need all our sources to learn.

Distance Learning

1. Scholarly Article

In this article it states that "by 2004 at least two million higher-education students in the U.s. were engaged in distance education utilizing various technologies that allow learners to lake courses independent of time and location constraints (Allen & Seaman, 2004). As shown above the amount of students have increased in distance learning because of the amount of flexibility and on ones own time. The author of this article Mayur Desai also adds the pros and cons of Distance learning verses Traditional learning. One interesting fact that I found was that online learning provides both asynchronous and synchronous communication, opposed to traditional learning where it only provides synchronous communication.
http://content.ebscohost.com/contentServer.asp?T=P&P=AN&K=35732425&EbscoContent=dGJyMNxb4kSeprl4zOX0OLCmrlGep7RSsa644SbKWxWXS&ContentCustomer=dGJyMO3e54q3%2ByDuePfgeyx%2BEu3q54A&D=pbh

2.Website.
This internet site states that increase of online education. It mentions that some and on the rise that high schools offer some type on online courses. and Online courses are not just for higher education students it is also provided to K-12 students nad beyond. Also It shows that most teachers teach as traditional teachers and also have to maintain a online class as well. It states that the cost is cheaper and students have the ability to attend class when it is fit into their schedual.
http://caret.iste.org/index.cfm?StudyID=430&fuseaction=studySummary

3. Podcast/video
This Podcast video is of an actual teacher giving his online orentation. This gives you a little taste of what an actual online class may be like. Although the core objectives of this class are similar to a traditional learning, it also show one what a online class enviornment will be like.
http://deimos3.apple.com/WebObjects/Core.woa/Browse/rcc.vccs.edu.2391509204?i=1935162000

In my opinion I like Distance and Online learning classes because of the flexibility for people. For those who work often and provide for a family, online learning makes it easier for that student/adult to attend a class of education. Although online classes are not for everyone there are still traditional learning enviornment which in my oppionion will never fade. Online classes are just providing more ways for people to get an education and if the case is where the student is not that actual person it will come back to bite them in the butt because of the lack of information they needed to obtain during that specific class. So...thats my post have funn.

Internet Safety

Website:

Many people have concerns about Internet Safety, so I have found a web site that gives you information about how safe your information is online. This website tells you how safe your medical records are. How to keep your credit safe since it has all the information someone need to steal your identity. It even tells you how safe your government information is i.e. your social.

with this website i think the writers are credible. All the info was mixed in from new to old so it gives a range of knowledge. anyone doing research can you this website fully because it has information on tons of identity safe questions.

http://www.privacyrights.org/index.htm

Podcast:

This podcast/video that i found talks about child safety on the Internet. The Professor says that the Internet can be a way to bully called cyber bullying. It says that to keep your child safe and keep them from doing wrong is to keep the computer in a common room. the computer should be able to be seen at all time so you know what you child is doing. they say you should also have the skill to be able to use the Internet yourself.

i think that this information is up to date for that reasons that internet safety in maybe not new but is in a way. With the sources i gave i think this does help for the research and to give a person ways to stay safe. And I think anyone could use this information If they wanted to.

Article:

The article that i found talked about a teacher helping her students understand Internet safety. She had them think about what information they wanted to put up but found they don't know how to distinguish between public information and private. She also had them think about the things they posted before they did to see what type of message they wanted to put out to people. All these things help protect a persons image and identity.

The author i feel is a credible source since it is posted on edutopia. It's new and up to date so that anyone can understand and you this information to any research on Internet safety.

I feel like this topic is one that needs to be discussed more and researched more for the sake that daily better hackers and predators out there becoming better and It needs to be solve.

Online Predators PAA 5

By : Michael Bonzar

1. Article
This article explains about Online Predators. It says how they come in different shapes and sizes, and have differing expectations from their online predatory experience. It talks about what their goals are, their emotions, and programs that can be used to stop children from being able to talk to online Predators.
http://www.softforyou.com/articles_tutorials/online_predators.html

2. Video
In this video an Online Predator is being interviewed. This video shows statistics and explains about why being safe online can keep these Predators away. The children are talked to about the internet and internet safety. This also talks about the Think You Know campaign.

3. Web Site
This website is a website that has over 400 listed online predators. You can contact the website, make donations, and learn about the online predators. Here, you can see where they are from, their convictions, and basically who, what, when, where.

Overall, my opinion is that there are online predators everywhere and people need to keep their kids safe. I believe that children in our society need to be taught how to use the internet in an intelligent way. Using websites such as facebook, myspace, msn messaging, aol instant messaging, and many other social networking places, I believe that many children are vulnerable to these Online Predators. If more people began to teach online safety, I think this issue would become, less of an issue. Although teaching would help, it would not stop the people who do these types of crimes. Its a horrible thing and is a big problem in our society today that needs to be dealt with somehow.

PAA 5 : Social Networking in Our Life's

By : Amanda Demetriou

1. Research Article :
http://www.edutopia.org/facebook-social-networking-teacher-recruitment

-- This article shows how Facebook and other Social Networking sites are used for a good reason. Many times, schools and workplaces will use facebook to get information about who they will be hiring and who will be in their schools. This has been a privacy issue for quite some time now and I'm glad to finally see an area that is using Facebook to its advantage. TeachNOLA recruiters created a Facebook group -- a digital network with a page on the social-networking site that gives basic information about the organization and a link to TeachNOLA's home page.

2. Podcast / Video :

--This video talks about how a Social Networking site like Facebook, is being used by employers to get information about their future employees. Although people sometimes don't agree with employers "invading their privacy" it is information that people put into the online database. In this video it also says how posting pictures can also help people get noticed, if they were trying to become a model or something like that. Their are pro's and con's for everyone and everyone definitely have different opinions about privacy on Social Networking sites!

3. Web Site :
http://www.govloop.com/

-- There are many different Social Networking websites. This website, www.govloop.com is a Social Networking site for the government employees! Is that crazy? Like facebook or myspace, this site allows government employees to do Social Networking.

www.govloop.com

My opinion about Social Networking has been the same since i started using Myspace, Facebook and other sites. I know many people think it is unfair for an employer or any type of company or school to "snoop" on their facebook for information, but in my opinion, it isn't "snooping" because its on the world wide web. I guess what I'm saying is, don't put something online that you wouldn't want the whole world to see! Right? These sites are for people to interact with one another, and it definitely is a good thing. I enjoy using Social Networking sites, and I know a lot of people who do. I liked doing this topic because it helped me understand it better. Before doing this I thought most people were against "snooping" on Social Network sites, but I now realize that a lot of people put things on the internet to get noticed! I guess this issue is one that will be around for along time, and everyone has different opinions, but Social Networking can go either way. It could be a great thing, or it could hurt you in many ways.

PAA5: Online Privacy Issues-Sarah Grandon

1. Scholarly Article:
STANALAND, ANDREA J. S., MAY O. LWIN, and SUSANNA LEONG "Providing Parents with Online Privacy Information: Approaches in the US and the UK." Journal of Consumer Affairs 43.3 (2009): 474-494. Academic Search Complete. EBSCO. Web. 9 Nov. 2009.

This article focuses on the importance of keeping children safe when it comes to their privacy on the internet. Adolescents tend to give out more information than they realize and this can in turn come back to harm them. Parents need to be the ones to reduce their child's privacy risks. The American Psychological Association has stated that “young children lack the cognitive skills and abilities of older children and adults,” and thus represent a potentially vulnerable group of consumers when it comes to online privacy risks (Kunkel et al. 2004). This clearly means that it is in the hand of the parents. In order to help the parents with this regulation, privacy notices on children's Web sites are needed. Thankfully, Web site operators are mandated by law to provide notices of their privacy policies with a clear, prominent link on the home page. The article also clearly points out the differences in children's privacy between the United States and the United Kingdom. This ultimately allows the reader to compare the two countries the results produced from each regulatory system.
This article shows how necessary it is to protects a child's privacy. It was very educational. The way the article took the time to do a comparison between the United States and the United Kingdom made the article even more for informational as well as interesting.

2. Credible Website:
Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)

This website offers top news articles as well as the information on COPPA. "COPPA is specifically meant for protecting the privacy of children under the age of 13 by requesting parental consent for the collection or use of any personal information of the users." The Act took effect in April 2000 in response to the growing awareness of Internet marketing techniques aimed at children. In addition to that, websites were collecting personal information from children without any parental notification. The Act applies to commercial websites as well as online services aimed at children. The FTC will consider whether a site includes an area for children as well as the subject matter and the presentation of the site. The website continues on to discuss the enforcement as well as the criticisms of COPPA.
This website was very informational. It clearly shows what brought about the development of COPPA and the difference COPPA has made. This website is the best way to learn about what is being done to protect children's privacy.

3. Video:
My Privacy: Safely Navigating Life Online

This video discusses the importance of online privacy for all people, not just children. It covers many topics from identity theft to cyber bullying. The people being interviewed strongly discuss the desire for choices. People want companies to give them the option of whether or not to give out personal information.
This video was very interesting. The people interviewed were everyday people of different ages. The video discussed issues that we all worry about. Being safe online is critical and we all need to take steps to protect our privacy.

Web 2.0 Tools in K-12 Classrooms

By Mrs. Macek

Yes, it's growing! More teachers and students are using Web 2.0 tools in classrooms.

In an important study, Speak Up 2008, was conducted with more than 1.5 million students, parents, educators and administrators about their use of technology over the past 5 years. The results are posted on the web site for Project Tomorrow at http://www.tomorrow.org/ The use of Web 2.0 Tools in the classroom is growing, and pre-service teachers and current teachers who want to engage their students will find these important tools to learn. The charts of student usage tell about important trends. In the graphs below, note the numbers of K-2 students using these tools! Also note how students’ uses of these tools far exceeds principals, parents and teachers.

This research is verified in the Journal article:

TPACK and Web 2.0: Transformation of Teaching and Learning. Nelson, Jennifer, Christopher, Angela, Mims, Clif TechTrends: Linking Research & Practice to Improve Learning; Sep2009, Vol. 53 Issue 5, p80-87, 8p.

summary in progress. . .

The importance of teachers learning Web 2.0 Tools is highlighted in the Podcast of a Speaker at E-Tech Ohio, February, 2009. Reinventing School in the 21st Century. School 2.0. Moving at the Speed of Creativity by Wesley Fryer.

He asks participants to define digital natives and digital immigrants! He says, “do not use this idea of digital immigrants as an excuse not to learn the technology. Be a digital learner!"

Some folks are digital refugees, but teachers have the opportunity to be a digital bridges – to bring content expertise to students via technology. The relationships with the students are the most important part of teaching – the way they challenge students and help them grow! Teachers who have ubiquitous access to technology need lots of support, but they have the opportunity for transformative use of technology in the classroom. There is much to discuss in his podcast. Facebook vs Myspace -Yachun Ku

"I Gave Up My Space for Lent": New Teachers and Social Networking Sites.

by Kist, William Source: Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy; Nov2008, Vol. 52 Issue 3, p245-247, 3p

This article discussed that many preservice teachers gave up their use of Myspace and facebook because of the warnings from the Ohio Dept. of Education. The Ohio Education Association
also believes that teachers should not take part in Myspace, facebook, or other social networking sites. It's interesting to read the responses from these preservice teachers. These young teachers who grew up with the technology, which became part of their life style in terms of social networking as compared with older generation. I believe whoever who set the policy to ban teachers from these social networking sites are older generation. I am sure that this is going to change - both technology and people.

Change in Facebook and MySpace use by race/ethnicity among a group ...
Change in Facebook

The survey was conducted among a group of first year college students in 2007 and 2009. The results shows that there is an increase in use of Facebook and a gernal decrease in use of Myspace. In 2007, 79% of the participated students were using Facebook while in 2009, increased to 87%. In contrast, while in 2007, 55% reported using Myspace, in 2009, only 36% do so. The survey also found that race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status related with students' using of Facebook/Myspace.

The following clip talks about social networking from youtube.com, interesting comments.

Online Predators

*Article: Online Safety at School
http//www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,1618907,00.asp

In this article it states that students are school computers rather than computers at home. This is because the students are better supervised and the computers are even monitored thought out the day. The librarians even know what to look for it is seems like a student is looking at things that are not academic. The chat option is also blocked, this is because it has been found that this is the main way the online predators like to find their victims. When enrolling your child into a school district; ask about their website, if there are pictures, students personal information. If there are pictures of students there should be at least four in the picture and should not be named. The article also talks about the COPPAA (the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) which states "bars Web sites from letting preteens use interactive communications or from collecting personally identifiable information from them without parental permission." I think that this act is a very important one. The article ends with saying that anyone involved are working together to making and ensuring that the students are safe as possible online at school.

*Website:
http://www.media-awareness.ca/english/teachers/wa_teachers/safe_passage_teachers/risks_predators.cfm

I picked this website because it talks about computers and internet assess in schools. The website begins with who is at risk to encounter with an online predator. These are kids and teenagers who chat rooms, e-mail and instant messaging. These things are not always bad when you are aware of who you are talking to, but if you are talking with someone that you don't know things can get ugly. This particular part of the website is for the teachers. Then the website talks about how the online predator works, they will talk to a student/child/teen via chat rooms, e-mail or instant messaging. While talking with the student they will lie about their age, being their victims age or younger. The predators will do anything to "seduce" their victims by simply giving them attention, affection, kindness, and even gifts. They will often devote considerable time, money and energy to this effort.

*Youtube: Online Predators- A must see for parents

In this video I found on youtube is a newscast featuring a children's book entitled Little Red Hoodie written by Adrianna Kruse. This book a different version on the classic tale of “Little Red Riding Hood.” In the book the “Big Bad Wolf” is an online predator portending that he was Granny. Adrianna Kruse got the idea for this book when she was in class with her 2nd grades and they were talking about a sleepover, where they got on to one of their older sisters myspace. This idea is something I wish I could have thought of. I will be going and getting one of these books for my god-daughter.

Technology in the classroom, keeping history in mind

http://www.ohiohistorycentral.org/index.php
I am such an Ohio history fan, and this site is great for that. It has other sites to visit, quick facts, and timelines. The timelines would be good for the students who would need information for their reports. The scrapbooks are a great way to show you students also how they could make their own project up for classroom assignments through technology.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xiisteObuhk
I like the way he does his video, he offers ten different ways we as future teachers can use technology in the classroom, through images, and ideas, and websites he talks about. The video is clear, and his speech is slow and clear and easy enough to follow.

Podcast/Video & Website - Web 2.0 Tools in the Classroom

This video portrays a teacher who has a pro-technology age attitude towards developing ways to promote valid and interesting lessons for students who are digital natives ...

The teacher refers to herself as a "teacherpreneur" and points out that often times the students are teaching her different technology concepts such as "terraform." I appreciated the atmosphere of collaborative learning that seemed to present itself in her classroom and the students definitely seemed to be engaged in learning.

I found the above podcast on the edutopia website, here is the address: http://www.edutopia.org/digital-generation-teachers-vicki-davis

The website that I found is: http://www.techsoup.org/toolkits/web2/

This website is geared towards helping non-profit organization but is full of information about the various Web 2.0 tools and how they are used, how to get started, sign up for e-mails of articles and discussions, visit the learning center tab and community tab for multiple links and leads to helpful technology information.

PAA5: The Internet and Issues- online predators

Online Predators
With the Internet being as popular as it is today online predators have become a big issue. Parents really need to watch their children when they are online because it can be very easy for them to talk with someone they do not know.

*WEBSITE:

A lot of parents out there do not realize just how dangerous the Internet can be for children, especially if they are talking with someone who can hurt them. This site explains how chat rooms are the most dangerous place for children to be. With television shows like "To Catch a Predator" it shows just how easy it can be for children to talk with people they shouldn't be. There are statistics, stories, surveys and more for parents to explore on this site. Hopefully it will help to educate parents to be more aware of their children's Internet use.

Web 2.0 tools in school - Sarina Colon

LEGITAMATE SITE:
http://www.solutionwatch.com/512/back-to-school-with-the-class-of-web-20-part-1/
I personally love this site! It has some really awesome ideas on how to use the organziers. They have a lot of them! The one I really like the most is gradefix. It orders and prioritizes your homework. How cool is that? They also have another section called gradebooks. They categorize under teachers a chalksite and engrade for teachers. The engrade for teachers is to help them with grades. I like it because it's faster and more helpful than doing it by hand. Once you start scrolling down the page, you see some other things you can check out like media sharing. This consits of things like youtube, flicker, and google video. I think this site is very imformative and you can get a lot of ideas with what they have.

PODCAST:
http://podcast.com/show/158850/Real-Estate-Web-2.0/
This one in particular deals with Real Estate. Beside the fact how you in can use web 2.0 in schools, you can use them doing your work if you are a realator too! If you browse down the web site you can see other podcasts pertaining to this feature. You can also share them on your myspace, facebook, twitter, and more. I like this one because its descripitive and it can help anyone.

For this website, it gives the basics on what web 2.0 is about. This can help grades k-12. I think that is more useful than it just pertaining to to just one grade group.

My opinion about web 2.0 tools is I think its amazing how you can do so much with it. Technology is increasing in many different ways for everyone and it fits what people like and it has different approaches on everything which I think it is great. Its fast and easy and you can access most of it through your computer.

Web 2.0 Tools in Schools

I decided to research Web 2.0 Tools for my blog research assignment and as I explored, I learned alot, as I was not previously clear on what Web 2.0 Tools were and the vast possibilites that exist when they are used. I learned that Web 2.0 tools are authoring tools that are available to anyone via the Internet and provide users with powerful capabilities of generating and sharing information online through blogs, wikis, online portfolios, social networking sites, podcasts, etc.

**********The following is the citation for the article I read:

Gersh, Sheila Offman. "Global Projects and Digital Tools." MultiMedia & Internet @ Schools Jan.-Feb. 2009: 10-13. Academic Complete. Web. 3 Nov. 2009. http://vnweb.hwwilsonweb.com/hww/results/results_single_ftPES.jhtml.

In this article, the author focuses on the "need to make our students 21st-century and global learners ..." and how Web 2.0 Tools are a great resource to accomplish this task. When referring to today's students, Gersh says, "Outside of school they are texting, using cell phones, creating social networks on the internet, and playing interactive games online; they often do all these things at the same time -- multitasking. They expect to use some of these tools when in school." Most importantly, the skills they can gain through using these tools can also be used to enhance and strengthen, and even complement the teacher's lessons/instruction. These Web 2.0 tools promote global collaborative projects. We can learn from others by using the internet, videoconferencing with experts, creating interactive, collaborative environments and these types of activities help "students develop their own authentic projects based on their own interests and questions about other cultures. When given these opportunities, students "become engaged and eager learners" ... and "are also more eager to produce work that is of high quality because they are now sharing their work with a real audience." Gersh sums it up by saying, "It's an exciting time in education. Teachers and students have the tools to .... make learning and teaching exciting."

Electronic Field Trips Good and Bad/ Legitimate Website R.C.

Electronic Field Trips. Web. 7 Nov 2009. http://www.commtechlab.msu.edu/

Several websites show how inexpensive yet rewarding electronic field trips can be. Michigan State's site shows how in some cases, all you pay for is the cost of delivering the programs to your classroom monitor. Another website resource is www.literacynet.org/science/trips.html . There you will find a cost anaylsis of several field trips. MSU's site also makes several points regarding the pros and cons of this kind of distance learning. Here there seems to be a consensus… like educators, not all educational programs are created equal. What your students will learn... definitely depends on who is delivering the message. Here in this sample clip at www.commtechlab.msu.edu/sites/letsnet/pix/rwanda.mov you see how teacher Cindy Lafkas helps her students digest web information about United Nations assistance mission to Rwanda. MSU’s website also shows how interactive video conferencing, pre-trip online research, and post trip follow up conferencing can make the electronic field trip better than the real thing. Important ideas with regard to field trip evaluation criteria are al so included at this site. These two web sites really bring you the latest evaluations on using electronic field trips in the classroom.

A video.

http://blip.tv/play/AYGglnYC" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="302" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

This is a video i found is interesting in some ways. Its a project i found when i searched for web tools 2.0 in classrooms. I think these videos i found were interesting because they show the project and how they did it. It shows the whole process of the project, which i enjoyed. The videos are also useful because if you want to stop the information given to you, you can at anytime/

classroom link web 2.0 tools

http://www.classroom20.com/ is a link i found that shows a classroom that uses 2.0 tools, and it showed how the transition is completely different from in the classroom and the online classroom. I do not find that hard to believe. I think some of this seems way too much, especially with social networking the classroom, i think some information should be kept private. If the blogs were strictly educational i would agree more with it, but personal information shouldn't be given or shown through these classroom blogs.

Web 2.0 Tools

In our Educational Technology into Teaching work book, by Roblyer it states: Web 2.0 authoring tools are being used in classes ranging from history and art education to science and foreign languages. Blogs, podcasts, social networking and other online text students explore media and state there opinions easier and communicate easily back in forth about there thoughts on different activities. Also typing your thoughts might be easier to get what you want across and gives you time to say exactly what you mean, rather than being on the spot and just verbally saying the first thing in your mind.
With all the online texts there are so many different types and ways you can use these. Not only with classrooms, where you could put your reflection and responses on your work, but with personal uses also.

Welcome to the Class Blog!

Welcome to the Fall 2009 EDCT 264 class blog. This is a forum for you to write informed postings on topics or issues in Distance Learning, based on the research you have been conducting. You will write informal annotated bibliographies.

Here are some suggestions:

• Make your blog postings short and readable. It is better to write two shorter posts than one long one to cover your topic.
• Give each posting a title that introduces the topic.
• Cite your sources: 1. Research article 2. web site or blog 3. podcast or video.

• Feel free to insert screen shots, pictures or even a link to the podcast or a video

• Write in complete sentences - not in texting shortcuts, but, feel free to use a more informal style than you would in a research paper.

• Comment on at least one other student's postings - the exchange is part of the fun
• Be creative - this is your forum to write an informed but informal opinion about your topic.
