1. Scholarly Article
In this article it states that "by 2004 at least two million higher-education students in the U.s. were engaged in distance education utilizing various technologies that allow learners to lake courses independent of time and location constraints (Allen & Seaman, 2004). As shown above the amount of students have increased in distance learning because of the amount of flexibility and on ones own time. The author of this article Mayur Desai also adds the pros and cons of Distance learning verses Traditional learning. One interesting fact that I found was that online learning provides both asynchronous and synchronous communication, opposed to traditional learning where it only provides synchronous communication.

3. Podcast/video
This Podcast video is of an actual teacher giving his online orentation. This gives you a little taste of what an actual online class may be like. Although the core objectives of this class are similar to a traditional learning, it also show one what a online class enviornment will be like.

In my opinion I like Distance and Online learning classes because of the flexibility for people. For those who work often and provide for a family, online learning makes it easier for that student/adult to attend a class of education. Although online classes are not for everyone there are still traditional learning enviornment which in my oppionion will never fade. Online classes are just providing more ways for people to get an education and if the case is where the student is not that actual person it will come back to bite them in the butt because of the lack of information they needed to obtain during that specific class. So...thats my post have funn.

It appears to be a new trend and according to your sources there are concerns on both sides of the fence.
ReplyDeleteI would say while it might be a good thing for those who otherwise would get no education...it in no way should become a substitute for the real thing. Part of the educational experience is being there. Even though you can be interactive via a keyboard... the communication and socialization takes on a different direction. And, not a good one in my opionion.
