by Kist, William Source: Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy; Nov2008, Vol. 52 Issue 3, p245-247, 3p

This article discussed that many preservice teachers gave up their use of Myspace and facebook because of the warnings from the Ohio Dept. of Education. The Ohio Education Association
also believes that teachers should not take part in Myspace, facebook, or other social networking sites. It's interesting to read the responses from these preservice teachers. These young teachers who grew up with the technology, which became part of their life style in terms of social networking as compared with older generation. I believe whoever who set the policy to ban teachers from these social networking sites are older generation. I am sure that this is going to change - both technology and people.

Change in Facebook

The survey was conducted among a group of first year college students in 2007 and 2009. The results shows that there is an increase in use of Facebook and a gernal decrease in use of Myspace. In 2007, 79% of the participated students were using Facebook while in 2009, increased to 87%. In contrast, while in 2007, 55% reported using Myspace, in 2009, only 36% do so. The survey also found that race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status related with students' using of Facebook/Myspace.

  1. Facebook is a great way to keep in touch with people and is also fun. Myspace is more for highschool students and gets boring after awhile. Nice article and blog about them

  2. Dr. Ku, I thought this was a good blog and good information. For me personally, I think this is a great way to stay in-touch with family and friends. Especially when there is a big distance or large familys. As a teacher, I have always been warned to keep my distance (and, I have). Students are always wanting to get a teachers personal information. I'm a very private person and it seems to me that facebook can leave you a little too out in the open for others to take advantage.
